Dave Weckl's new cd due out July 12th

Yeah, that's pretty much the translation that came outta my gourd when i saw that DW pic Pocket posted [say that 20 times fast-ly]. Esp since I have that same outfit hangin' in my closet [in the "Action-80s section"]. Yep, pleated baggie pants, black shirt [w missing matching bollo tie], & same design vest.
Take it easy on him, Pock...I'm sure it was from the "retro" section of his new site.

I hit my head on the Merriam-Webster 80s-Termonolgy Thesaurus when i hit [prob around the same time as 5]. ["So THAT'S what's wrong with ya!"]

Again, Heredia; i thought his playing on TT perfect for that genre. Not nec immature, but yes it could be busy. Hey, it's the genre, baby. And it's Tech. [img]wink.gif[/img]

I just got the album. I think it's one of his best. There are some tricky arrangements, a fair share of soloing, and a song in 7. I will keep it in my car CD player. Weckl is one of my classic fave drummers.
This CD has a lot of stuff going on and will require repeated listenings to digest.

All in all, it rocks! [img]wink.gif[/img]

But then again, I got it for free from the record company. So maybe I like it better that way. I paid for the live album---and did not enjoy it much.

I will check out Heredia live at Sunday in Amsterdam. And about Luke, I've seen him many times and he is still a cat but an old one [img]wink.gif[/img] [img]tongue.gif[/img] LMAO

Yeah, the LAVPI is, well...just blowin'. I mean buzzsaw-busy drone rippin', like only the great DW can muster! [like the Zep tune, "Whole Lotta Notes"]...

But anyway, I'm still looking for my [drum-porn musical-m*st*rb*t*ry] jaw after listening to it for only the 3rd time... [img]wink.gif[/img]

Maybe they should've also just sub-titled the disc "Give the da** drummer & those pop-singers often fantastic backing musos some!!!" Woo-hoo. Wee-haaww, evun.

No offense to any of you. In my opinion the compositions in his own band are not my favorite. Sorry....This is after all a forum. I never said I didn't like Dave. <font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I think it's poor to say that Weckl plays like a machine on his own albums (and who could program a machine that way by the way [img]eek.gif[/img] ).

The Light Years album is much more machine-like (but still good performance of its time) than e.g. perpetual motion [img]graemlins/smarty.gif[/img]
And yes, much of the material on the cd's of the GRP days are a little machine-like.....but all of the DWB cd's are certantly not machine-like, and the compositions awesome.

I'm just really anoyed when people speak of Weckl as not being musical (and further blame the man for being precise is just plain &%%?#?), because it is a ridiculos thing to say. I mean, ok, you don't dig the music, fine, but don't patronize the man's music and style like an ignorant, because I can see from your other posts, that you aren't [img]wink.gif[/img]

Well, anyway, I (always) expect much from a new Weckl CD, and from the sound clips, I don't think I'll be disapointed this time either [img]biggrin.gif[/img]

Five Eight right...consistently awesome sound from Dave's drums. I think its wrong to say that Very Plugged In has no feel and finally, Weckl on the Steve Khan's album is sweet as hell.

I'm often puzzled by folks who seem to find the need to find something wrong with a cat like Weck, Virg, or Vince, for Gadd's sake [or even GADD, FTM!]. [This is NOT directed at Para, but just in general; as he handled his post quite eloquently]...

I'm "In the Mood," so...Warning...could be a little bit of a bumpy road ahead, to some [don't say i didn't give ya the Heads Up [img]wink.gif[/img] ].

Because when all is said & done, you'd better be one BAAAAAD mofro on the kit to have to find some kink in the armor / opening in the teflon vest of either of these cats [they may - or not - be there, but...eh, what was the point again]?

It's laughable, folks critiquing cats like this while these same cats are out there changing awa setting the bar in the face of rhythm in music as we speak.

Questions to ask oneself:

_Who have you recorded & toured with? [Go to Dave's site to see your competition]...
_How many instructional vids [AWA charts/play-along books] do you have out?
_How many MDF, ADAA, or TUDW DVDs are you gracing?
_Is your name tossed around as much as any of these cats?
_How many major companies are clamoring for your endorsement?
_How many cutting edge discs have you out on the market?
_When was the last time Chick or Camilo called you up for a gig?
_Did Ersk & A Jackson ["I've just played w da**-near the best drummer i've ever played with!"] ever laud you praises?
_When was the last time Vinnie said something nice about your playing in an MD article?
_How many name, cutting-edge, world class musicians have you played with, or are in your band?
_Do you have [awa run] your own world-class level band?
_When was the last time you were gazing across at Vinnie & Gadd at a Chick gig or Buddy Rich video?
_Does the mere mention of your name strike awe, fear, [or sometimes loathing [img]tongue.gif[/img] ] in the hearts of millions of drummers & other musos on a worldwide level? Or start a thread like this one?
_Do you even have a "household" name amongst drummers/musicians worldwide?

The reality is Dave could care less about that kind of talk because he's out there doing it, & shoving it up the musical arse of everyone to plainly hear.

Now, I realize that those factors listed above don't nec mean anything...then again, NOT. They DO mean something, if not just to make an interesting if "subtle" point. ;-)

Just the fact that one owns at least one or more of DW's CDs says plenty right there. ;-)

I don't find it wrong if someone "isn't feeling DW or his groove" or whatever. But I'm watching the Next Step vid segment w Spur OTM where he does the synchop "displacement" & solo over the vamp...Jeez. The guy's a musical Mozart on the kit. [Hope that's not an insult to Dave ;-p ]...

I was talking to accomplished "prog-fuso-metal" drumr Derek Roddy late last year, & of course all 3 of these cats' names came up. I told him about the naysayers/pooh-pooers out there. He remarked, "Yeah, I don't buy any of that bull****."

Get off'd if you want, but that's a REAL Bottom-Line reality check.

I'm not here to "win the vote;" but to tell it like it is, & perhaps level the playing field. /;-)

Just imagine how it feels to have achieved the total artistic freedom in playing that these men have achieved! They leave me breathless. Every time. It truly separates "the men from the boys" if you ask me. And I'm not even his agent. /;-P

Just thought i'd jerk the rug out / rattle some cages / getcha up outta yer easy chair...towards no one in partic, just in general, thought it needed to be said...don't know if it'll get 'heard,' tho. ;-p

...To sit back now quietly & (Not-so-)eagerly await the onslaught...it's OK, tho...I have Dave's teflon/asbestos/armored-vest on loan [thx, Dave!]... [img]tongue.gif[/img]
